Statement on Intellectual Freedom and Freedom to Read
(ALA) American Library Association Based
A publicly supported library provides free and equal access to information for all people of that community. We enjoy this basic right in our democratic
society. It is a core value of the library profession and the freedom to read is essential to democracy. As individuals devoted to reading and as librarians responsible for disseminating ideas, we assert the public interest in the preservation of the freedom to read. Now as always in our history, reading is among our greatest freedoms. Librarians have a profound responsibility to give validity to that freedom to read by making it possible for readers to choose freely from a variety of offerings.
